2015 Maîtrise concerts of BONI, BOUZIGNAC and CAMPRA

Friday 16 January 2015

Three concerts by the Maîtrise de Toulouse, in Toulouse (30th January), Versailles (12th February) and Saint Bertrand de Comminges (19th September) will focus on composers from Toulouse and the South-West of France.

Guillaume Boni (who was master of the choristers at Toulouse cathedral from 1568 to 1593) is virtually unknown. We will perform several of his motets. By happy coincidence I discovered that his motets were composed (very probably) for the visit of Charles IX to Toulouse in January 1565 – We will be singing bringing them back to life exactly 450 years later !
André Campra – ‘maître de chapelle’ of the cathedral in Toulouse from 1683 (before moving to the same post at Notre Dame, Paris). His motet Diligam te Domine, whose manuscript is in the Toulouse library, appears to be completely unknown to other choirs, despite its great quality. (On our CD Motets français).
Guillaume Bouzignac received his musical education at the then renowned maîtrise of the cathedral at Narbonne. His motets are highly individual, and often dramatic.
